Nature's Renaissance: A Journey Through Faia Brava
Ana, Antonio, and fellow biologists transformed abandoned farmland into Faia Brava, Portugal’s first private nature reserve. Established 25 years ago, it now spans over 2,000 acres of cliffs, river, and hills, serving as a hub for rewilding efforts. The reserve supports diverse wildlife, including griffon vultures, Bonelli’s eagles, wild horses, and native plants. Biologists continue acquiring land as farming families leave for urban areas. Antonio enthusiastically shares insights about local species, like queen ants and vulture nesting habits. However, the return of the lynx, an apex predator recently sighted nearby, remains uncertain, symbolizing the broader ecological challenges that must be addressed for true restoration.
